Kansas City, Missouri - A 22 year old woman was traumatized after being wrongly placed in the all-male wing of the Research Psychiatric Center in Kansas City, Missouri, at 2323 E. 63rd Street. The lawsuit was filed at the Jackson County Circuit Court, alleges that she was assaulted and that male patients exposed themselves to her, during her stay as a resident of the facility.

How did it happen according to the Plaintiff? 

The woman, her name undisclosed for her safety, went to seek help from the Research Medical Center's emergency room to seek help for her mental health condition. When she was transferred to the psychiatric department, she was wrongly placed in the wing with only male patients. The psychiatry center is a 100-bed inpatient facility, which provides treatment for adolescents, adults and seniors for several emotional disorders, different mental illnesses as well as substance abuse. A majority of the facility keep wings single sex for safety reasons.

According to its website, the Research Psychiatric Center was supposed to offer therapeutic programs with the aim of supporting people in their mental health. However, according to Plaintiff's lawsuit,  the Research Psychiatric Center failed at it job miserably. Instead of providing the care that their patients needed and deserved, they instead caused trauma, psychological injuries, and anxiety by placing females in the same wing as male patients. This caused the woman to feel threatened, exposed, and vulnerable.

Who was at fault?

The lawsuit alleges that Dr. Philip Khoury—a psychiatrist—and the staff are at fault. The woman believed that Dr. Khoury was responsible for the decision to place her in the all-male wing, while the staff, who were instructed to check on her every 15 minutes failed to do so.

With the failure of the Research Psychiatry Center to follow its own policies and procedures, it resulted to the unfortunate incident of harassment and assault by the male patients. 

The lawsuit condemns the psychiatric facility as reckless, disregarding the woman's safety, mental health, and overall well-being.
